Doxycycline monohydrate is a generic prescription antibiotic used to treat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections. As a tetracycline antibiotic, it works by stopping the growth and spread of bacteria. Doxycycline monohydrate can only be taken as an immediate-release tablet, capsule, or oral suspension. However, it’s only one version of doxycycline. Other versions of doxycycline can be purchased as an oral solution, syrup, injection, or as delayed-release capsules.
