Flecainide is used to treat certain types of serious irregular heartbeat such as persistent ventricular tachycardia and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. It is used to restore normal heart rhythm and maintain a regular, steady heartbeat. Flecainide can also be used to prevent certain types of irregular heartbeat from returning including atrial fibrillation. Flecainide is known as an antiarrhythmic drug. Group 1 antiarrhythmics, like Flecainide, are sodium-channel blockers, which block the fast sodium channels, thereby slowing the electrical conduction in the heart. Treating an irregular heartbeat can decrease the risk for blood clots, and this effect can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.
Before this drug is prescribed for you, your healthcare provider will need to know if you have or have ever had a heart attack, chronic atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, a heart condition called "sick sinus syndrome", an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood), or liver disease.
Dizziness, vision problems, trouble breathing, headache, nausea, or feeling weak or tired are some of the common side effects of Flecainide.
More serious Flecainide side effects can include fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness (like you might pass out), slow heart rate, weak pulse, slow breathing (breathing may stop), feeling short of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, fever, flu-like symptoms, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking Flecainide and call your healthcare provider immediately.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA.
