Ganirelix is a generic prescription drug used to regulate hormones and prevent ovulation in women undergoing fertility treatments using ovarian hyperstimulation drugs.
Ovulation is caused by the release of a hormone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which causes the pituitary gland to release two hormones, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), that stimulate the ovaries to release mature eggs. In ovarian hyperstimulation, drugs are administered that cause the ovaries to produce several mature eggs. These are removed by a physician at a certain time in the monthly cycle to be fertilized in vitro. The danger is that a sudden rise in luteinizing hormone may result in immature eggs being released early from the ovaries.
Ganirelix attaches to the same places in the pituitary gland that gonadotropin-releasing hormone attaches to and prevents the pituitary gland from releasing LH and FSH. This prevents ovulation until the eggs are matured and can be removed for in vitro fertilization.
Ganirelix is administered as a subcutaneous injection once daily during the middle to late follicular phase (first 16 days) in the woman's reproductive cycle.
The most common side effects of Ganirelix are site reactions to the injection, such as pain, irritation, redness, and swelling.
Other common side effects of Ganirelix include, but are not limited to, nausea, stomach pain, headache, vaginal bleeding, diarrhea, weight gain, swelling, and shortness of breath.
Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, swelling of the face, or hives, and contact your physician if you believe you are having an allergic reaction.
