What is Gavilyte-G?

Gavilyte-G is a prescription colon cleanser prescribed to help clear the colon prior to a colonoscopy or barium enema. The active ingredient in Gavilyte-G, polyethylene glycol 3350 (or PEG-3350), is an osmotic laxative that draws water into the colon. Specific instructions, including the timing of a clear liquid diet, will be given by the doctor’s office, which are very important to follow closely to allow for a successful procedure. In general, Gavilyte-G is mixed with water to fill the 4 liter jug and the evening before your procedure you drink ~8 ounces every ten minutes until about half the container is left.
