What is Gavilyte-G?

Gavilyte-G is a prescription colon cleanser prescribed to help clear the colon prior to a colonoscopy or barium enema. The active ingredient in Gavilyte-G, polyethylene glycol 3350 (or PEG-3350), is an osmotic laxative that draws water into the colon. Specific instructions, including the timing of a clear liquid diet, will be given by the doctor’s office, which are very important to follow closely to allow for a successful procedure. In general, Gavilyte-G is mixed with water to fill the 4 liter jug and the evening before your procedure you drink ~8 ounces every ten minutes until about half the container is left. Then the next morning, around 4-6 hours before your appointment, the other half of the container is consumed in the same process. .

Gavilyte-G also includes electrolytes (sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium sulfate) to ensure that there is no net loss or gain of electrolytes or water in the body.

Gavilyte-G is supplied as a powder that must be filled with water to the 4 liter fill line before drinking. Never consume the dry powder by itself.

What are the side effects of Gavilyte-G?

Common side effects of Gavilyte-G include but are not limited to nausea, gas, bloating, fullness, stomach cramps, vomiting, and anal irritation. The most serious but very rare side effects are extreme abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal perforation, and pulmonary edema. Gavilyte-G allergies are rare. Allergic reactions include skin rashes, itching, wheezing, shortness of breath, and hives. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
