Hibiclens is a brand-name antiseptic that fights bacteria. It is usually used to clean the skin to prevent infection that may be caused by surgery, injection, or skin wounds. Hibiclens contains 4% chlorhexidine gluconate solution. Chlorhexidine gluconate, the generic version, is also used as a mouthwash to treat gingivitis and reduce bacteria in the mouth. 

This skin cleanser should only be used externally. Do not take it by mouth or allow this product to get inside your eyes, ears, nose, or genital area. Once your doctor has given you the okay to use this product, it is important that you follow the directions on the label or those given to you by your doctor or healthcare professional. This medicine should not be used as a preoperative skin preparation of the face or head.

Hibiclens is not recommended for use in young children as it may cause severe burning and skin irritation.

What are the side effects of Hibiclens?

Common side effects reported with the use of chlorhexidine gluconate as a mouthwash can include a change in taste, increase in tartar (calculus) on teeth, staining of teeth, mouth, tooth fillings, dentures or other mouth appliances, toothache, tongue coating, skin irritation, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Less common side effects such as mouth irritation and swollen glands on the side of the face or neck. Tongue tip irritation may also occur while you’re using this drug.

Though an allergic reaction is very unlikely, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction. Signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction can include rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, tongue, eyes, lips, or throat.
