Jardiance is a brand-name medication that’s used along with a healthy diet and exercise to treat Type 2 diabetes. It can also lower the risk of hospitalization and death in adults with certain medical conditions. Jardiance comes as an oral tablet and it lowers blood sugar by releasing sugar through the urine. Common side effects of Jardiance include urinary tract infections (UTIs) and yeast infections.

Jardiance is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to:
Lower blood sugar levels in people ages 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes when used together with a healthy diet and regular exercise
Reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Reduce the risk of hospitalization and cardiovascular death in adults with heart failure
Reduce the risk of worsening kidney damage, hospitalization, and cardiovascular death in adults with chronic kidney disease
It’s important to note that Jardiance should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes because it can increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis in this population. Also, It should not be used for certain adults with chronic kidney disease. This includes people with polycystic kidneys or patients who need high levels of immunosuppressive therapy.

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.
Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you. This medicine is usually taken in the morning.
Jardiance can be taken with or without food.
Stop taking Jardiance for at least 3 days if you have a major surgery or procedure planned. Talk with a healthcare professional about when it’s safe to resume Jardiance treatment.
If you miss a dose of Jardiance, take it as soon as you remember. But never take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you’ve had an allergic reaction to empagliflozin or any other ingredients in the drug.
Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results. For example, sugar can be present in the urine while you’re taking Jardiance. This will show up on a urine test.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, congestive heart failure, high cholesterol, or a history of pancreas problems or genital yeast or urinary tract infections. Tell your doctor if you are on a low-salt diet, if you drink alcohol, or if you are having a surgery or other procedures.
You should not take Jardiance if you have type 1 diabetes. Doing so can greatly increase your risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a serious and life-threatening event where you have high ketones and acid in the blood.
Jardiance can cause low blood sugar levels, especially if taken with certain other diabetes medications. This can cause symptoms such as dizziness, sweating, confusion, and shaking. In severe cases, it can cause seizures or fainting. Be sure you know how to treat low blood sugar quickly before you start taking Jardiance.
Additional problems this medicine may cause are:
Low blood pressure
Kidney problems
Increased risk of genital yeast or urinary tract infections
Fournier's gangrene (skin or tissue damage of the area between the anus and genitals)
Lower leg amputation
Some medicines can affect how empagliflozin works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:
Diuretic (water pill)
Insulin or another diabetes medicine
Lithium
Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.
Provide your healthcare provider an updated list of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you take to avoid drug interactions.
Jardiance may cause side effects that range from mild to severe.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop any of the following side effects:
Low blood pressure: lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting
Fournier’s gangrene: pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling of the area between the anus and genitals, fever, unusual tiredness or weakness
Low blood sugar: increased hunger, confusion, shaking, trembling, sweating
Ketoacidosis: fast or troubled breathing, tiredness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
Allergic reaction: itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
Urinary tract infection (UTI): change in how much or how often you urinate, bloody or cloudy urine, painful or difficult urination, lower back or side pain
Other side effects may include:
Female genital yeast infection: white or yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal itching or odor
Male genital yeast infection: redness, itching, pain, or swelling of the penis, bad-smelling discharge from the penis
High cholesterol
Joint pain
Upper respiratory tract infection
