Jatenzo is a brand-name prescription testosterone capsule used for testosterone replacement therapy in men with low testosterone. Jatenzo capsules are taken with food twice daily. Regularly scheduled blood tests are required to make sure the doses are correct. Men should also check their blood pressure regularly when taking this drug.

What is Jatenzo used for?

Jatenzo is an orally-dosed testosterone product FDA-approved to treat low testosterone in men who have been diagnosed with testicular failure (primary hypogonadism) or problems with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism).

How to take Jatenzo

  •  Follow all the prescriber’s instructions when taking Jatenzo.

  • Please read the Medication Guide that comes with this medication.

  • Take two doses daily—once in the morning, and once in the evening.

  • Take Jatenzo capsules with food.

  • Swallow the capsule whole with a drink of water. Do not crush, break, or chew it.

  • Store Jatenzo capsules in a dry place at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Jatenzo

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible.

  • Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for the next dose.

  • Take the next dose as usual.

  • Do not take an extra capsule to make up for a missed dose.

Jatenzo contraindications

  • Jatenzo is not safe for everyone to take.

  • Do not take Jatenzo if you have:

    • Breast cancer

    • Prostate cancer

    • Known sensitivities to testosterone undecanoate 

  • Jatenzo is also contraindicated for use in pregnant women.

Jatenzo warnings

  • Tell other healthcare professionals providing treatment that you are taking Jatenzo.

  • The prescriber requires regular checkups and blood tests to adjust doses, monitor treatment, and check for side effects. Keep all appointments.

  • Men are advised to regularly check their blood pressure. Tell the prescriber if blood pressure gets too high.

  • Before starting Jatenzo, tell the prescriber about all your medical conditions, particularly:

    • High blood pressure

    • Heart problems

    • A history of heart attack or stroke

    • High red blood cell counts

    • Trouble urinating because of an enlarged prostate

    • Liver problems

    • Kidney problems

    • Sleep apnea

    • A history of mental health problems, including suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, or mood disorder

  • Jatenzo can cause serious problems, including:

    • Blood clots in the legs or lungs

    • High red blood cell counts

    • High blood pressure

    • Worsening of enlarged prostate

    • Increased risk of prostate cancer

    • Liver problems, including liver tumors

    • Edema

    • Worsening of sleep apnea

    • High calcium

    • Low thyroid hormone levels

    • Lowered sperm counts

    • Development of female breasts

    • New or worsening depression

    • Suicidal thoughts and behaviors

  • Tell the prescriber about any changes in the status of your health when taking Jatenzo.

  • Testosterone supplements have a high potential for abuse.

    • High doses can cause serious heart and psychological problems.

    • Do not increase the dose or take capsules more often than prescribed.

    • Do not take anabolic steroids when taking Jatenzo.

  • Women should not take Jatenzo.

Jatenzo interactions

  • Before starting Jatenzoi, tell the prescribing clinician about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements regularly taken, particularly:

    • Insulin

    • Blood thinners

    • Corticosteroids

    • Drugs that increase blood pressure, such as stimulants and cold medicines

  • Do not use anabolic steroids while taking Jatenzo.

  • Men taking blood pressure medications may need to have their dose adjusted or be switched to a different blood pressure drug.

  • Tell other healthcare professionals about Jatenzo before they prescribe new medications.

Jatenzo side effects

Serious side effects

Talk to the prescriber if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Sudden pain in your lower leg (calf) that won’t go away

  • Numbness or weakness on one side of your body, sudden or severe headache, sudden vomiting, problems with walking, speech, or eyesight

  • Sharp, sudden chest pain, chest tightness, trouble breathing, coughing up blood

  • Swelling of the leg or foot

  • Enlarged or painful breasts

  • Yellow skin or eyes, fatigue, nausea

  • Changes in urination, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and urine accidents

  • Breathing problems while asleep

  • Unusual moods or behaviors, sudden mood changes, thoughts of hurting yourself

  • Allergic reaction: Itching, skin rash, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or neck, trouble breathing

Some of the serious side effects of Jatenzo may not have clinical signs, so regular doctor’s visits are required to spot these problems:

  • High red blood cell counts

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol or fats

Less serious side effects

  • Diarrhea

  • Indigestion

  • Burping

  • Nausea

  • Headache
