What is Lomaira: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Lomaira is a short-term appetite suppressant used with diet and exercise to help people lose weight. The active ingredient is phentermine, a stimulant that also affects appetite. Low-dose Lomaira tablets are taken three times daily before a meal. Because of the risks, treatment lasts only a few weeks.

What is Lomaira used for?

Lomaira suppresses appetite to help temporarily speed up weight loss in people with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or 27 kg/m2 in people with certain risk factors.

How to take Lomaira

  • Your healthcare provider will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.

  • Take one tablet three times per day 30 minutes before a meal.

    • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

    • Lomaira tablets are scored so that they can be divided into two 4 mg doses. If you are prescribed 4 mg doses, ask the doctor or pharmacist how to divide the tablets.

    • Avoid taking Lomaira tablets late in the evening or near bedtime.

  • Store Lomaira tablets in a closed container at room temperature out of the reach of children.

What to do if you miss a dose of Lomaira

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember, but it must be taken before a meal. 

  • If it is almost time for your next dose (or the next meal of the day), wait until then and take the dose for that meal. 

  • Do not take an extra tablet to make up for a missed dose.

Lomaira contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. 

  • Do not take phentermine if you have had an allergic reaction to phentermine or similar medicines.

  • Do not take phentermine if you have:

    • A history of cardiovascular disease including coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, heart rhythm problems, or uncontrolled high blood pressure

    • Overactive thyroid

    • Glaucoma

    • Agitated states

    • A history of drug abuse

  • Do not take phentermine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Lomaira warnings

  • The prescriber will need regular follow-ups and possible blood tests. Keep all appointments.

  • Do not take Lomaira if you are pregnant. Immediately inform the prescriber if you become pregnant or think you’re pregnant.

  • Do not breastfeed when taking Lomaira.

  • Phentermine is a controlled substance because of its risk of physical dependence, misuse, overdose, and theft.

    • Do not use phentermine for longer than a few weeks.

    • Do not use more than the prescribed dose.

    • Be familiar with the signs of tolerance and call the doctor if the dose stops working.

    • Do not give or sell Lomaira tablets to anyone else.

    • Store this medicine securely out of the reach of children and other people.

  • Before starting Lomaira, tell the prescriber if you have:

    • Heart problems 

    • Heart valve problems

    • Heart rhythm abnormalities

    • A history of stroke

    • High blood pressure

    • Kidney problems

    • Glaucoma

    • Diabetes

    • Overactive thyroid

    • Problems with agitation

    • A history of drug abuse

  • This medicine may cause serious medical problems including:

    • Primary pulmonary hypertension (blood clot in the lungs)

    • Heart valve problems

    • Elevated blood pressure

  • This medicine may cause impairment. Do not drive or engage in any risky activity until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Tell other healthcare providers treating you that you are using this medicine.

Lomaira interactions

  • Do not use this medicine and an MAO inhibitor (MAOI) within 14 days of each other.

  • Before starting Lomaira, tell the prescribing healthcare provider about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements you are using, particularly:

    • Other weight loss medications

    • Other stimulants

    • Insulin and antidiabetic drugs

    • Alpha blockers 

    • Carvedilol, labetalol

  • When taking phentermine, avoid other weight loss drugs or remedies unless cleared by the healthcare provider. This not only includes weight loss drugs purchased with or without a prescription, but weight loss supplements and herbal products, as well. 

  • Do not drink alcohol while you are using this medicine.

  • Tell other healthcare providers you are using this medicine before they prescribe new medications.

Lomaira side effects

Serious side effects 

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting

  • Fast, slow, pounding, or uneven heartbeat

  • Allergic reaction: Hives, itching, swelling in your face, lips, mouth, or throat, trouble breathing

Less serious side effects

  • Headache

  • Restlessness

  • Insomnia

  • Dizziness

  • Dry mouth

  • Nausea

  • Mood changes
