Pramipexole is a generic prescription drug that treats Parkinson's disease and Restless Leg Syndrome. Pramipexole is the active ingredient in Mirapex and Mirapex ER.
Parkinson's disease is the most common degenerative neurological condition and can be severely debilitating. It is characterized by involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia), loss of coordination, and difficulty walking or balancing. As the disease progresses, even daily living tasks become extremely difficult to perform.
The symptoms of Parkinson's are due to nerve death in the brain which causes a shortage of dopamine, an important chemical for transmitting signals between nerve cells. Pramipexole belongs to a class of medications called dopaminergic agents. These drugs increase the dopamine effect in the brain, giving the brain better control over muscle movements.
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), also called Willis-Ekborn disease, is an overpowering and often physically uncomfortable urge to move the leg when sitting or lying down. The condition is largely inherited, but it can be triggered or worsened by iron deficiency, Parkinson's disease, kidney disease, diabetes, pregnancy, nerve damage, and certain types of medications. Restless Leg Syndrome is typically treated by anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin, but dopaminergic agents, such as Pramipexole, are sometimes used to relieve symptoms.
Pramipexole is taken as a tablet three times a day for both Parkinson's and RLS.
While not a complete list of side effects, the most common side effects of Pramipexole are muscle spasms, involuntary muscle movements, uncontrollable postures, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, vertigo, sleep problems, blurred vision, and falling. Mental and mood changes include confusion, forgetfulness, and uncontrollable urges. Allergic reactions are rare but discontinue Pramipexole if there is any sign of an allergic reaction, such as hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing.
