What is Nizatidine used for?

Nizatidine is prescribed for the treatment of ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It is a histamine-2 blocker that works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Nizatidine also treats heartburn and acid reflux.

How to take Nizatidine

  • If you are taking: One dose a day, take at bedtime. Two doses a day, take one in the morning and one at bedtime. Several doses daily, take doses with your meals and at bedtime.

What to do if you miss a dose of Nizatidine

  • Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Nizatidine contraindications

  • You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to famotidine or to similar medicines such as ranitidine (Zantac®), cimetidine (Tagamet®), or famotidine (Pepcid®, Fluxid„¢).

  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.

  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you have kidney disease or liver disease.

  • Nizatidine may not work as well if you smoke.

  • You should not use nizatidine within 2 hours before or after taking ketoconazole (an antifungal drug).

  • Avoid using large amounts of aspirin while taking nizatidine.

  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.

Serious Side Effects

  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness.

  • Dark-colored urine or pale stools.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.

Less Serious Side Effects

  • Mild nausea.

  • Breast tenderness (or breast swelling in men).

  • Dizziness.
