Is there a generic of Novolin N?

Novolin N is only available as a brand-name prescription drug. There is no generic version of Novolin N currently available.

What is Novolin N?

Novolin N is an intermediate-acting, synthetic insulin that is used to control high blood sugar in children and adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Novolin N starts working within two to four hours after it is injected and can keep working for 12 to 18 hours.

You should not use Novolin N if you are having an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or if you are allergic to this medication. You should only use Novolin N as prescribed by your doctor.

Novolin N is available in vials with an injection pen or syringe. It is administered under the skin with a new needle every time. Do not share needles or your injection pen, even if you have changed your needles. You should inject Novolin N at a new spot every time.

Unopened Novolin N can be stored in the refrigerator until it expires.

Before using Novolin N, you should inform your doctor about medical conditions you may have—especially a history of liver disease, kidney disease, or low potassium levels in your blood. You should also inform your doctor about medications you may be taking, including over-the-counter treatments, vitamins, and supplements.

What are the side effects of Novolin N?

You should avoid drinking alcohol while using Novolin N as it can cause low blood sugar and affect how this medication works.

If you are using other diabetes medications along with insulin, it can increase your risk of low blood sugar. The amount of insulin you take may need to be adjusted if new medicines are added.

Other side effects of Novolin N include but aren't limited to low blood sugar, weight gain, swelling of your hands or feet, and itching or a mild rash. You should call your healthcare provider immediately if you have signs of an insulin allergy with symptoms like an itchy rash all over your body, trouble breathing, and chest tightness. Get emergency medical attention for symptoms of low potassium, which may include leg cramps, constipation, increased thirst or urination, and numbness or tingling.

Is Novolin N short or long-acting?

Novolin N is considered to be an intermediate-acting insulin. It won’t bring down glucose levels immediately like a short-acting insulin does. It starts working about 2 hours after injecting it, and its peak effect is in 4-12 hours. Novolin N may be paired with other types of insulin, like long-acting or short-acting insulin, to control blood sugar at different times of the day.

What is the difference between Novolin N and Novolog?

Novolog is a fast-acting insulin. It starts working within 5 - 15 minutes after injecting it. Novolog is used to control blood sugar after eating. Novolin N may be paired with a short-acting insulin like Novolog to control blood sugar at different times of the day. Your healthcare provider will help you find the right combination and doses of different types of insulin.
