What is Ocaliva used for?

Ocaliva is indicated for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis. This condition damages the bile duct of the liver and causes bile acid to build up and damage the liver tissue. Ocaliva decreases the amount of bile made by the liver, stopping it from building up and damaging the liver.

How to take Ocaliva

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

  • If you are taking cholestyramine, colestipol, or colesevelam, take Ocaliva® at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after these medicines.

  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Muscle or joint pain

  • Rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet

  • Sore throat
