Is there a generic of Prelief?

Prelief is a brand-name over-the-counter drug. The generic version is calcium glycerophosphate, and it usually comes as a powder or tablet.

What is Prelief?

Prelief is a brand-name, over-the-counter drug for people who suffer irritation when they eat or drink acidic foods, such as coffee, wine, tomato sauce, citrus juices, and other foods. The active ingredient is calcium glycerophosphate, which, according to the manufacturer, “removes” 95% of acid from acidic foods. Calcium glycerophosphate is technically an “antacid,” that is, it buffers and neutralizes acid solutions in the foods you eat.

Prelief is a prophylactic (preventative) that comes in tablet and powder form; the powder is meant to be stirred into the food before eating (coffee, wine, juice, tomato sauce, etc.). Two tablets are taken immediately before mealtime.

Prelief and its active ingredient have been shown to help relieve symptoms and discomfort arising from interstitial cystitis (a condition in which the patient feels continual pressure in the bladder) and overactive bladder. Many patients use Prelief solely for their bladder problems rather than for heartburn.

What are the side effects of Prelief?

The most common side effect of Prelief is taste impairment (foods don't taste right). Less common side effects include, but are not limited to, constipation and swelling of the ankles or feet. Taken in excess, Prelief can contribute to kidney stones. Allergic reactions and mood changes are very rare.
