Quinidine Sulfate is a generic prescription drug that treats or prevents heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) in the atria, or upper two chambers of the heart. The most commonly diagnosed heartbeat irregularities are atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, both caused by disorganized electrical signals in the atria.
The lower two chambers of the heart are called the ventricles. While Quinidine Sulfate is not safe to use for ventricular irregularities, it can be prescribed to suppress sustained fast heartbeats caused by the ventricles if they are life-threatening.
Quinidine Sulfate belongs to a family of drugs called antiarrhythmics which help to return heartbeats to normal. Quinidine Sulfate interferes with two important chemical mechanisms that produce the electrical signals in nerves and muscle contractions. In this way, Quinidine Sulfate helps restore normal electrical signals in the atria, returning heartbeats to normal.
Quinidine Sulfate is taken as a tablet. The dose and schedule will depend on the severity of the underlying condition.
Common physical side effects include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, stomach pain, heartburn, lightheadedness, headache, fatigue, chest pain, and tremor. Quinidine is chemically similar to quinine, which can be toxic even in a single dose. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of quinine poisoning such as ringing in the ears, hearing problems, blurred vision, confusion, and headache. Mental and mood changes include nervousness. Allergic reactions are very rare. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
