Rasagiline is a generic prescription drug that treats Parkinson's disease, a progressive brain disorder that causes involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia), loss of coordination, and difficulty walking or balancing. The symptoms of Parkinson's are due to nerve death in the brain which causes a shortage of dopamine, an important chemical for transmitting signals between nerve cells.
Rasagiline increases dopamine in the brain by preventing a protein, called monoamine oxidase, from breaking down dopamine. For this reason, Rasagiline is classified as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Normally, the brain needs to clear out dopamine so that it doesn't build up, but because Parkinson's disease results in a shortage of dopamine, blocking this process helps increase dopamine and relieve the symptoms of the condition.
Rasagiline and other MAO inhibitors are often the first drug therapy used when Parkinson's is diagnosed. In advanced cases, MAO inhibitors are used in combination with other Parkinson's drugs.
While not a complete list of side effects, the most common side effects of Rasagiline are involuntary muscle movements, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, loss of appetite, weight loss, indigestion, stomach pain, joint pain, flu symptoms, swelling, and falling. Long-term continual use of Rasagiline often leads to tardive dyskinesia (unusual twitching and involuntary movements). Mental and mood changes include depression and strange dreams. Allergic reactions are rare, but discontinue Rasagiline if there is any sign of an allergic reaction, such as hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing.
