Rocaltrol is a prescription medication used to treat patients with vitamin D deficiency. It works to boost vitamin D levels in the body. This maintains the parathyroid hormone and minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, to keep your bones healthy and strong.

How to take Rocaltrol

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

  • Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

  • Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to calcitriol or to vitamin D.

  • Seizures

  • Do not use more calcitriol than your doctor ordered. Too much of this medicine may cause a dangerous amount of calcium to build up in your body.

  • If you are not on dialysis, drink extra liquids to prevent dehydration. Ask your doctor how much liquid to drink each day.

  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

  • Nausea and vomiting, long-lasting headache, constipation, sleepiness, weakness

  • Severe stomach pain, metallic taste in your mouth

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any medical problems.

Rocaltrol interactions

  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

  • If you are not on dialysis, drink extra liquids to prevent dehydration. Ask your doctor how much liquid to drink each day.

  • Some medicines can affect how calcitriol works. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following: CholestyramineDigitalisDiuretics (water pills), such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)KetoconazolePhenytoin or phenobarbitalSteroids, such as hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone, prednisone

  • Do not take vitamins, calcium supplements, or other forms of vitamin D while you are taking calcitriol. If you are on dialysis, do not take antacids that contain magnesium while you are taking calcitriol.

  • Bone or muscle pain

  • Nausea and vomiting, long-lasting headache, constipation, sleepiness, weakness
