What causes a yeast infection in women?

Yeast infections in women are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans. This happens when something disrupts the balance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina. Examples include antibiotics, uncontrolled diabetes, hormonal changes, poor hygiene, tight clothing, high sugar diets, weakened immune systems, stress, and douching.
