What is Cefdinir?

Cefdinir is an antibiotic. It belongs to the class of antibiotics called third-generation cephalosporins.

Follow the dosing directions carefully, and be sure to finish the full course of treatment to make sure the infection is cleared completely, and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

You should let your doctor know if you have any other underlying medical conditions such as diarrhea, colitis, or kidney disease, to make sure that Cefdinir is safe for you to use.

What does Cefdinir treat?

Cefdinir is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, and sinusitis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

What should I avoid while taking Cefdinir?

Avoid antacids or mineral dietary supplements that contain aluminum, iron, or magnesium for two hours before or after taking Cefdinir. Antacids or iron (not including iron-fortified baby formula) can interfere with the body’s absorption of Cefdinir. Ask a healthcare provider or pharmacist for a full list of Cefdinir interactions.

What are the side effects of Cefdinir?

Common possible side effects experienced while on treatment taking Cefdinir include nausea, diarrhea, headache, itching of the genital area, and yeast infections.

Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If any of these symptoms occur, seek emergency medical care right away. You should also get emergency medical help if you have symptoms of a severe, life-threatening skin reaction. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash, or blistering/peeling skin.

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. Notify your healthcare provider immediately if you have watery or bloody diarrhea, even if it is up to several months after your last Cefdinir dose. This type of diarrhea can range from mild to severe or even cause death, so seek immediate help if it occurs.

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. You can also talk to your pharmacist or healthcare professional about treatment and its side effects when taking Cefdinir.

What is the brand name of Cefdinir?

Cefdinir is the generic version of the brand-name drug, Omnicef.
