What is Altacaine used for?

TetraVisc comes in the form of an ophthalmic solution and is used as a local anesthesia to numb the eye before surgery or other treatments. Do not use TetraVisc if you are allergic to tetracaine. Common side effects may include feeling nervous or excited, dizziness, drowsiness and chills.

Altacaine contraindications

  • You should not receive this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to tetracaine or other similar numbing medicine, or to aminobenzoic acid.

Altacaine warnings

  • Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • Make sure you do not rub your eye, or expose your eye to irritating chemicals or dust particles after you receive this medicine.

  • Blurred vision.

  • Chest pain or trouble breathing.

  • Lightheadedness or fainting.

  • Nausea or vomiting.

  • Seizures or tremors.

  • Slow heartbeat.

  • Swelling, redness, severe pain or itching of your eyes or eyelids.

  • Depression (sadness) or agitation.

  • Sensitivity to light.
