Aminophylline is a generic prescription drug used to open airways during an asthma attack or as a result of bronchitis or emphysema. There is no brand-name equivalent.
Aminophylline is a generic prescription drug that opens or keeps open airways when they are closed or tightened by an asthma attack, bronchitis, or emphysema. Aminophylline is the hydrated form of the more commonly-used theophylline, that is, it is theophylline with a water molecule attached. This hydrated form is specifically designed for emergency injections, but Aminophylline might also be found as a tablet or suppository.
Aminophylline, when it is absorbed into the lung's tissues, blocks a protein that muscles need to contract, and so lung muscles relax and tend to stay that way. Aminophylline also locks on to surface chemicals in the lung tissues that respond to the substances, such as histamines, the body releases in response to an allergen. These substances cause swelling as part of the immune response to the allergen. By blocking these substances, Aminophylline weakens the lung's allergic response and the associated swelling and muscle contractions.
Aminophylline is administered as an injection by a healthcare professional along with other drugs and corticosteroids to treat an active breathing crisis.
The most common side effects of Aminophylline include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, headache, and insomnia. Mental and mood changes include irritability. Allergic reactions to Aminophylline are rare but watch for rashes, hives, or swelling. Discontinue use of Aminophylline if you experience an allergic reaction.
