Naloxone is a generic prescription drug used in emergencies to treat the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose.
Opioids slow down nerves by blocking signals at their junctions. An overdose of opioids will cause the nervous system to slow down so much that breathing will stop and death will result. Naloxone binds to the same opioid receptors in the brain and nerve cells as opioids do without affecting the nerves. In the process, Naloxone flushes opioids from those sites Naloxone can be administered as an injection below the skin, an injection into the muscles, an intravenous injection, or as a nasal spray. Naloxone begins to affect opioid overdose three to five minutes after injection.
Naloxone typically comes in a kit so that it can be used by emergency or non-medical personnel in an emergency setting with only a minimum of skill or training. These kits typically include a breathing mask, alcohol swabs, and syringes.
Naloxone is sometimes used to diagnose opioid usage and is also a non-clinical ingredient in Suboxone, a brand-name medication with the opioid buprenorphine. Suboxone is used to treat opioid withdrawal. Naloxone is included to block the opioid effects of buprenorphine so that patients cannot get a “high” from that opioid.
The most common physical side effects of Naloxone are due to the abrupt reversal of the opioid's effects. Naloxone's side effects are in some ways similar to opioid withdrawal symptoms and include nausea, vomiting, sweating, flushing, fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, and high blood pressure. If given to a patient who is receiving opioid medications for pain, Naloxone might also result in a sudden onset of pain. The most significant side effects of Naloxone are seizures, coma, heart attack, or death. Mental and mood changes include agitation and hallucinations. Allergic reactions are rare.
