Anagrelide is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat a blood disorder known as thrombocythemia, which is caused by your bone marrow making too many platelets. Blood platelets are a type of blood cells that the body used to form blood clots. Excess blood clots can cause bleeding and circulation problems. This medication reduces the number of platelets in the bloodstream by blocking their production.
Anagrelide is available in the form of an oral tablet that can be taken with or without food, usually two to four times daily. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose, usually, once a week, to find the best dose that keeps your blood count closer to normal.
Do not take more than 2.5 milligrams of this medication in a single dose and no more than a total of 10 milligrams in a day. Use this medication on a regular basis to get the most benefit from it. Use it at the same time every day to help yourself remember. Continue using this medication even if you feel well. Patients with high platelets may not feel sick.
Anagrelide may cause headaches, diarrhea, weakness, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, and dizziness. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
Inform your doctor immediately you experience serious side effects such as unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, swelling of the ankles or feet, rapid breathing, stomach pain, unusual tiredness, signs of kidney problems, and vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Anagrelide as this is not a complete list of side effects.
