What is Apretude?
Apretude is classified as an HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI). Manufactured by the pharmaceutical company ViiV Healthcare Company, it is FDA-approved for use in at-risk adults and adolescents (weighing at least 35 kg, or 77 lbs) for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection through sex. HIV is the virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Patients must have a negative HIV-1 test before using Apretude. You will either start treatment with Apretude, or take Vocabria (oral cabotegravir) for four weeks first.
Apretude is administered by a healthcare provider by intramuscular injection (injection into a muscle) of the gluteal area. It is given once a month for two months, then once every two months after that.
What are the side effects of Apretude?
Common side effects of Apretude include:
Injection site reactions such as pain, swelling, redness, and bruising
Stomach problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and gas
Headache
Fever
Fatigue
Sleep problems
Muscle and/or back pain
Rash
Appetite loss
Sleepiness
Upper respiratory tract infection
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. Other serious side effects may include liver problems, depression, or suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Be alert to changes in mood and behavior while taking this medication, and report any changes to your healthcare provider right away.
Does Apretude cause weight gain?
In clinical trials, people who took Apretude had a small amount of weight gain, anywhere from an average of two to 9 pounds over about two years.
Is Apretude as effective as Truvada?
In terms of use for PrEP, two studies compared Apretude vs. Truvada and found that Apretude was more effective in preventing HIV. This may be because Truvada is a daily pill, while Apretude is given monthly for two months, then every two months, making it easier to adhere to the regimen. However, the best drug for you can only be determined by your healthcare provider. See your healthcare provider for professional medical advice on the best medicine for you.
