Is there a generic of Arava?

Arava is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient leflunomide. The generic version of leflunomide is available from manufacturers such as Sandoz, Alembic, and Par, among many others.

What is Arava?

Arava is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks cells in the joints, causing swelling, stiffness, and pain.

The first line of attack in rheumatoid arthritis is white blood cells called lymphocytes, which produce antibodies. These proteins attach to cells and paint a target on them so that other white blood cells can gather and destroy them. The active ingredient in Arava, leflunomide, interferes with the ability of lymphocytes to get enough energy to reproduce themselves and produce enough antibodies to attack joint tissues successfully.

Arava is administered as a tablet once daily.

What are the side effects of Arava?

Arava suppresses the immune system and lowers the body's ability to make antibodies to infections or cancers. Patients are at a higher risk of infections, including severe and life-threatening infections, as well as certain types of cancer.

Common side effects of Arava include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, hair loss, back pain, weakness, nerve pain, and rash. Serious side effects include high blood pressure and liver problems.

Allergic reactions are rare but potentially severe, including anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and severe and potentially fatal skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, a body-wide reaction that involves blisters, peeling, and the death of skin tissues. If you experience any allergic reactions to Arava, such as fever, rash, itching, hives, or wheezing, talk to your physician.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects or drug information. Consult with your healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice about possible side effects and drug interactions before starting on Arava.
