This medication is used in the treatment of head lice, which are tiny insects that live on and irritate your scalp. Benzyl Alcohol keeps the entry points that lice need to breathe open, causing the bugs to die from suffocation. However, it does not kill lice eggs.
This medication comes in the form of a topical lotion meant for use on the hair and scalp only. This medication is usually used in 2 treatments, one week apart. Since this medication does not get rid of lice eggs, it is important to have a second treatment to get rid of any lice that may have hatched.
This medication will need to be applied by a secondary individual. Cover your eyes with a towel and keep your eyes tightly closed while the medication is being applied. It should be applied to dry hair and enough medication should be used to cover your entire scalp and hair. Massage Benzyl Alcohol into your hair and scalp. Leave it in your hair for about ten minutes, then rinse with water. A fine-tooth comb or lice comb may be used afterward to remove the treated lice and lice eggs.
Benzyl Alcohol may cause irritation, itching, redness, tingling, or numbness at the application site. Eye irritation may occur if this medication gets into the eyes. Tell your doctor if these effects persist or worsen. Most people using this medication do not have any serious side effects.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.
Speak with your doctor or healthcare provider for professional medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Benzyl Alcohol as this is not a complete list of side effects.
