Clindesse (clindamycin phosphate) is a prescription drug that is taken by non-pregnant women to treat bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a vaginal infection that is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that is normally found in the vagina, which can cause abnormal vaginal discharge and odor. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the vagina is unable to maintain a slightly acidic pH balance. A woman's pH balance is a way of measuring vaginal health. If there is increased growth of a bacteria called gardnerella vaginalis, a woman can experience bacterial vaginosis. However, other types of bacteria could also be responsible for bacterial vaginosis.
When applied, Clindesse reduces the growth of bad bacteria in the vagina. Clindesse is available as a vaginal cream, and it is not recommended to be ingested or inserted into the eyes. Before taking Clindesse, you should speak with a healthcare professional to determine if Clindesse is the best medication to treat your bacterial vaginosis symptoms.
It is not uncommon for Clindesse to cause some side effects. Some reported side effects of Clindesse include headache, back pain, diarrhea, constipation, and dizziness. Some women may experience a burning sensation in their vagina or a thick, white vaginal discharge with no odor after using Clindesse. The use of Clindesse can also cause vaginal fungal infections or urinary tract infections.
Consult your healthcare provider for other possible side effects associated with Clindesse.
If you are pregnant or are currently breastfeeding, you should share this information with your healthcare provider.
It is not recommended to take Clindesse if you have a history of bowel problems such as colitis or enteritis. It is also not recommended to take Clindesse if you have ever experienced a Clostridium difficile infection.
Clindesse can affect how some medications work. If you take any other medications, you should share this information with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice to know if Clindesse is right for you.
