Curosurf is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Chiesi USA, Inc. There is currently no generic alternative available.
This FDA-approved medication is used to treat babies suffering from or at risk of a condition known as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Most babies are born with a substance known as a surfactant in their lungs. This substance stops the lungs from sticking together and helps make normal breathing possible. Premature babies are usually born without surfactant and this causes RDS. Curosurf is a natural form of a surfactant obtained from pigs and helps your baby to breathe normally until they produce their own surfactant.
This medication is available in the form of an intratracheal suspension. It is usually administered directly into the lungs with a tube. This is done by a doctor or nurse who is trained and experienced in the care of premature babies. Your baby's doctor will determine what dose should be used and how long your baby will be treated. This typically depends on the baby's weight and other factors.
Each vial of this medication is used once only and the remaining suspension is discarded. Your baby will need to be frequently monitored by a nurse or doctor so that oxygen and ventilatory support can be modified as required.
Like most medicines, Curosurf may cause some unwanted side effects. These may include a slow heart rate or low blood pressure. During treatment your baby may experience frothing at the mouth, coughing, choking, and sneezing. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional if you are concerned about the side effects resulting from the use of this medication.
