Is there a generic of Eliquis?

Eliquis is a brand-name drug that contains the active ingredient apixaban. It is currently manufactured by Bristol Myers Squibb and marketed by Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer. Generic Eliquis has been approved by the FDA; however, it is not yet available in the United States. This generic drug may not become available until 2026 due to an extension of the original drug patent. Once generics are available on the market, several manufacturers will likely produce them, which will help the price come down.

Ways to save on Eliquis

Eliquis is taken to treat blood clots or to prevent them for people who are at risk. Because of this, Eliquis may be taken for months or years. That cost can add up over time, so ways to save on Eliquis include:

  • Print or download a SingleCare discount card to save on the cost of Eliquis.

  • Check the manufacturer’s financial assistance program to see if you qualify.

  • Look into different health insurance options. Find out whether Eliquis is included in the formulary.

  • Check out the formulary for different Medicare Part D, Medicare Advantage, or state Medicaid plans.

  • Ask your healthcare provider about samples of Eliquis to start treatment.

  • Ask your healthcare provider about other anticoagulant options.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Eliquis?

Generic Coumadin (warfarin) is an inexpensive alternative to Eliquis and is covered by most insurance. However, it comes with a higher risk of bleeding, and blood levels need to be monitored closely. Xarelto (rivaroxaban), which is in the same drug class as Eliquis, comes in a generic version but only in a dosage that prevents blood clots for some conditions. For blood clot treatment, the other medications in this class are all brand names, similarly priced, and not available in generic form.
