What is Elmiron?

 Elmiron is commonly used to treat bladder pain or discomfort that comes with interstitial cystitis (IC). Elmiron is a prescription medication that is a member of the miscellaneous genitourinary tract agents drug class and it must be taken continuously for you to have some relief. You may need to take Elmiron for 3-6 months to have symptom relief. Note: Elmiron is not a pain medication, like acetaminophen or aspirin.

Elmiron has weak blood thinning properties, and can increase bleeding. Your doctor or healthcare professional should know if you plan to undergo surgery so they can advise you when to discontinue Elmiron before the surgery takes place. You cannot use Elmiron during pregnancy and it is important that you take Elmiron as prescribed by your doctor.

What are the side effects of Elmiron?

If your doctor recommends Elmiron to treat your pain or discomfort caused by bladder disorders, you may experience the following side effects: diarrhea, hair loss, nausea, blood in your stool, headaches, rashes, upset stomach, dizziness, and bruising.

Weight gain and swelling caused by fluid buildup in the body have also been reported in patients taking Elmiron. Let your healthcare provider know if you are taking anticoagulant therapy, if you are pregnant, or if you have liver problems. Tell your doctor if you experience any changes in vision. Regular vision exams are recommended while taking Elmiron.
