Erythromycin Base is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent certain types of bacterial infections. Erythromycin Base is a member of the macrolides drug class. Drugs in this class inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria by reversibly binding to the P site of the 50S unit of the ribosome. Macrolides mainly affect gram-positive cocci and intracellular pathogens such as mycoplasma, chlamydia, and legionella.
Erythromycin Base was the first macrolide discovered; other macrolides include azithromycin, clarithromycin, and roxithromycin. Their action is primarily bacteriostatic but may be bactericidal at high concentrations, or depending on the type of microorganism. In short, these drugs prohibit the growth of bacteria.
There are some drugs that may result in a negative or bad reaction when used along with Erythromycin Base, and some drugs should not be used at the same time. To avoid experiencing a bad drug interaction, tell your doctor about all your current medications and any medicine you have used within the last two to three weeks. This will include any prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, as well as herbal products too.
Common side effects of Erythromycin Base include mild diarrhea, or nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite. Older adults may be at a higher risk of experiencing more serious side effects like hearing loss, or a life-threatening fast heart rate.
