Multaq is an antiarrhythmic medication that helps to maintain a normal heartbeat in people with a history of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). It is prescribed to reduce the chance of becoming hospitalized due to atrial fibrillation in patients in sinus rhythm (having a normal heartbeat) with a history of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. Multaq may also be used for other conditions as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Multaq is available as an oral tablet that is usually taken twice daily with meals. Multaq should only be used as directed by your doctor. Store Multaq out of the reach of children as it is only indicated for use in people who are older than 18.
Common side effects of Multaq include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, tiredness, weakness, and rash, redness, or itching of the skin.
Serious side effects may include liver problems with symptoms such as loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, and fever. Other serious side effects may include inflammation of the lungs, low magnesium and potassium levels, kidney problems, and slowed heartbeat (bradycardia). Seek medical advice or get immediate medical attention if you notice any unusual side effects that persist or worsen.
Multaq may contain active or inactive ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction. Get emergency medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling of the face or throat, and trouble breathing.
Tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have and a list of all prescription and nonprescription medications you take, including herbal supplements, before taking Multaq.
Tell your doctor if you have other heart problems. There may be an increased risk of death, stroke, and heart failure in patients with decompensated heart failure (worsening of the signs or symptoms of heart failure) or permanent atrial fibrillation (normal sinus rhythm cannot be restored).
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, as using Multaq may potentially harm an unborn baby or nursing infant.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult a healthcare provider for other possible side effects and precautions before taking Multaq.
Multaq works to maintain a normal heart rhythm by blocking potassium channels. The use of Multaq can result in a slowed heartbeat. Multaq should be avoided in people who have a slow heart rate or one that is less than 50 beats per minute.
One of the side effects of Multaq is bradycardia or a slowed heartbeat. Multaq should be used with caution in people who are also taking beta-blockers, due to an increased risk of bradycardia.
Multaq is typically prescribed as a long-term treatment. Your healthcare provider will recommend a regular visit to check your heart rhythm and see how the drug is working. It is not recommended to stop taking Multaq without first consulting a healthcare provider. Discontinuing treatment may increase the risk of heart problems. However, Multaq may be discontinued for different reasons, such as the development of serious side effects, lung toxicity, or liver injury.
The half-life of dronedarone is 13 to 19 hours. It is metabolized in the liver and mainly excreted through the feces. The rate and extent of absorption of the drug are affected by meals. Taking Multaq with meals can help improve the absorption of the drug.
