Exjade (deferasirox) is a brand-name prescription drug that removes excess iron from the body. Exjade is prescribed to patients with iron poisoning due to repeated blood transfusions, called transfusional iron overload. Although iron is a naturally occurring and critical part of our diet, overdosing on iron can lead to iron poisoning and even death. The active ingredient in Exjade, deferasirox, is an iron chelator, that is, it's a small molecule that binds to iron in the body. Both the deferasirox molecule and the iron attached to it pass into the kidneys and are eliminated through the urine. Exjade is taken as a film-coated tablet taken once per day. Because of potentially serious side effects, patients are monitored at least once per week during treatment.

What are the side effects of Exjade?

Exjade has serious and potentially fatal side effects. The active ingredient, deferasirox, ranks second in the Institute for Safe Medical Practices list of drugs suspected as a cause of patient deaths. Severe and potentially fatal side effects include gastrointestinal hemorrhage (bleeding in the gut), kidney failure, liver failure, and lowered blood cell counts. Less serious but common side effects of Exjade include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, drowsiness, vomiting blood, yellow or pale skin, and changes in kidney function. Allergic reactions to the active ingredients are rare.
