Firvanq (vancomycin hydrochloride) is a glycopeptide antibacterial used to treat clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and enterocolitis caused by staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains).
Firvanq only treats bacterial infection within the intestines. It is not known to be effective for bacterial infections in any other part of the body or for infections caused by viruses like the common cold and flu.
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Firvanq, it should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
To ensure Firvanq is right for you, tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription or OTC, natural products, or vitamins that you may be on. Your healthcare provider should also be informed about any pre-existing health condition that you have. You should not start, stop, or change the dose of this drug without checking with your doctor.
The most common side effects that accompany Firvanq use include bloody or cloudy urine, decreased urine, difficult, burning, or painful urination, dry mouth, fever, frequent urge to urinate, increased thirst, irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, lower back or side pain mood changes, and muscle pain or cramps.
Some Firvanq side effects may not necessarily need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.
If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, rashes, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, throat, or other parts of the body then contact your doctor immediately for medical advice and attention. It is important to note that this is not a complete list of side effects associated with Firvanq. You should report side effects to the FDA as well.
