Most people know the antidepressant fluoxetine by its brand name Prozac, though most people take generic fluoxetine. It’s one of the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications in the world. It can help alleviate depression, a frequent reason people seek medical help. Healthcare providers also use it to treat other mental health conditions, many of which are off-label uses. Once-daily doses are always taken orally, but fluoxetine only works if taken for months at a time. During that time, it’s very likely there will be some mild side effects.
