Fondaparinux is a generic drug available under the brand-name Arixtra. Fondaparinux is manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Inc. and Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Fondaparinux is used to treat life-threatening blood clots in the legs or lungs. It is normally used with other medications like warfarin. If left untreated, blood clots can make their way to the lungs, heart, or brain, and result in possibly fatal breathing problems, heart attack, or stroke. This drug may also be used to prevent blood clots after certain surgeries with an increased risk of blood clots such as hip fracture, abdominal, knee, or hip replacement
Fondaparinux belongs to the factor Xa inhibitors drug class. Drugs in this group work by blocking the activity of clotting factor Xa, preventing clotting. They affect both factor Xa within the blood and within a pre-existing clot. They do not affect platelet aggregation. They are used for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis and acute pulmonary embolism, and to reduce the risk of stroke and embolism in people with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
Factor Xa is generated by both the extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathways and is responsible for activating prothrombin to thrombin. Factor Xa inhibitors have predictable anticoagulant effects and do not require routine monitoring, unlike some other anticoagulants.
Fondaparinux is a blood thinner so some side effects associated with use may include bleeding, easy bruising, insomnia, rash, blisters, dizziness, confusion, or minor bleeding, rash, itching, or oozing where the medicine was injected. Fondaparinux can also cause a very serious blood clot around your spinal cord if you undergo a spinal tap or receive spinal anesthesia (epidural).
This is not a full list of possible Fondaparinux side effects, speak to your doctor for medical advice on other side effects you may experience while using Fondaparinux.
