Gemtesa is available only with a prescription, Gemtesa works by relaxing the bladder muscle that pushes urine out of the bladder. When relaxed, this muscle allows the bladder to fill with urine without any problems. Side effects are minimal and uncommon, but Gemtesa may cause serious urinary retention in some people, particularly when combined with other overactive bladder treatments.

Gemtesa relieves the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), including incontinence, urgency, and frequent urination.

How to take Gemtesa

  • Take this medicine as directed.

  • Please read the Patient Information sheet that comes with this drug.

  • Take only one tablet per day.

  • Tablets can be taken with or without food.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water.

  • People who can’t swallow a tablet may crush the tablet and mix it with one tablespoon of applesauce. Eat the mixture immediately with a glass of water.

  • Store Gemtesa tablets at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Gemtesa

  • Ask the prescriber what to do in case a dose is missed.

  • Never take two doses in one day to make up for a missed dose.

Gemtesa contraindications

  • Gemtesa is not safe for everyone.

  • Do not take Gemtesa if you have had an allergic reaction to vibegron or any of the ingredients in the tablet.

Gemtesa warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are taking Gemtesa. 

  • The prescriber will schedule regular visits to check on the effectiveness of treatment. Keep all appointments.

  • Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, breastfeeding, or have:

    • Liver problems

    • Kidney problems

    • Difficulty urinating

  • Gemtesa can cause serious problems including urinary retention or severe allergic reactions. Call the prescriber immediately if you cannot empty your bladder or you experience facial swelling or breathing obstruction.

  • Side effects are relatively mild and uncommon.

Gemtesa interactions

  • Tell the prescriber about all the prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements you take, particularly:

    • Other overactive bladder medications

    • The heart medication digoxin

  • Tell other healthcare providers treating you that you are taking Gemtesa before they prescribe new drugs.

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Difficulty urinating, weak urine stream, inability to urinate

  • Allergic reaction: Swelling in your face, mouth, or tongue, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing

Less serious side effects

  • Headache

  • Stuffy, runny nose, sore throat

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea
