What is Veltassa?

Veltassa is a prescription drug used to treat high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia). This drug works by binding to the potassium in your digestive tract and prevents the body from absorbing too much. Veltassa can also assist your body in getting rid of excess potassium through your bowel movements. This medication differs from others in that it goes through the stomach and into the intestines without being absorbed into your bloodstream.

This medicine is not approved for anyone under 18 years old. Do not take this drug if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Mix the powder with water before taking it. Stir well and drink right away. Then, add some more water to the glass, swirl gently, and drink immediately. Do not consume the dry powder alone—it must be mixed with water. You can mix Veltassa with other drinks or soft food like applesauce but do not mix hot liquids with the powder.
