What is Glatiramer?

Glatiramer is a prescription medication used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). It mainly helps to decrease periods of relapses and prevents or delays disability. While Glatiramer may be used to prevent relapses, it is not a cure for multiple sclerosis. The way this medication works is not completely understood, but is thought to prevent the immune system from attacking the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.

Glatiramer is administered by injection under the skin, as directed by your doctor. This medication is available in 2 different dosages. Depending on your dose, it may be given once daily, or three times a week, at least 48 hours apart. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Before taking glatiramer, talk to your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history. Tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and any vitamins or supplements.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully on how often you should use this medication. If you are taking this medication at home, learn all preparation and usage instructions from your doctor. Your first injection will usually be given by your doctor in a medical setting.

What are the side effects of Glatiramer?

Injection site reactions such as pain, redness, soreness, and swelling may occur. Other common side effects include nausea, chills, chest or back pain, flushing, rash, weakness, anxiety, and sweating. Tell your doctor if these effects persist or worsen.

Tell your doctor right away if you have serious side effects that include dizziness, fainting, chest pain, signs of an infection, mental or mood changes such as depression, severe pain at the injection site, shakiness, swelling of the legs or feet, or vision problems.

Allergic reactions are rare. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away.
