What is Humulin?

Humulin is a type of intermediate-acting insulin used simultaneously with a proper diet and exercise regimen for people living with Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus to help control high blood sugar levels.

Humulin works by helping blood sugar get into cells so that your body can use it for energy. Humulin helps to improve blood sugar control in both children and adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. If you are experiencing low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or too high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), Humulin should not be taken.

Humulin is intermediate-acting and starts to work two to four hours after injection and peaks in four to 12 hours. Vials that are opened may be kept under refrigeration or stored at room temperatures of less than 86°F. Do not administer Humulin with an insulin pump.

Usually, Humulin is injected subcutaneously into the thigh, stomach, or upper arm. Your doctor should instruct you on how to properly use the medication yourself as it is injected under the skin. Sharing an injection pen or syringe with another person should not be tolerated even if the needle was changed as this can cause a serious infection to be given or contracted from one person to another. Speak to your healthcare provider about the proper administration of Humulin.

Humulin may be used alone or with other oral diabetes drugs but tell your doctor if you also take pioglitazone or rosiglitazone. When taking certain oral diabetes medicine and using insulin at the same time, this can increase your risk of a serious heart problem.

What are the side effects of Humulin?

While Humulin can be used to treat diabetes, there may be some side effects when using this drug. Commonly reported side effects of Humulin include weight gain, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, itching, low blood sugar, and thickening or hollowing of the skin where the injection was given. Contact your doctor immediately to seek medical advice should these occur as this is not a full list of all possible side effects.

If you are breastfeeding, consult with your doctor first as this medication will pass into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Talk to your doctor about using Humulin when breastfeeding. Consult with your doctor to find out if this drug is right for you.
