What is Mediplast?
Mediplast is a brand-name over-the-counter adhesive patch with salicylic acid used to reduce warts, corns, and calluses. All of these are conditions characterized by the growth of excess skin tissue. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic drug: it works by thinning, removing, and peeling off excess skin cells on the affected area.
Mediplast also includes antiseptics (Balsam Peru, phenol, cresol) to prevent infection, a skin moisturizer (lanolin), an anti-inflammatory substance (terpineol), and talc to keep the skin under the adhesive dry and free from rash.
Also sometimes referred to as a sticking plaster, plaster, or, incorrectly, an adhesive bandage, Mediplast is applied adhesive-side down to the affected area and kept there for at least 24 hours. Some health-care providers suggest that it can remain on the affected skin for as long as 7 days The patch will slowly release salicylic acid onto the surface of the skin. Corn and callus removal will take about 14 days of patches and wart removal will take up to 30 days.
