What is Keralyt?
Keralyt is a brand-name over-the-counter (3% salicylic acid) and prescription (6% salicylic acid) topical skin remover. The over-the-counter version is used to thin dry, scaly, or callused skin. Keralyt as a prescription topical gel is used to thin out thickened or hardened skin, such as calluses, thick skin on the foot or hands (palmar keratosis or plantar keratosis), rough skin resembling acne around the body's hair follicles (keratosis pilaris), and scalp psoriasis. All of these are conditions in which the body produces excess skin which builds up into rough, dry patches or plaques. The active ingredient in Keralyt, salicylic acid, works by weakening the tissues in the outer layer of skin on the affected area, which makes it easier for that skin to fall or rub off.
Keralyt Shampoo is a 6% salicylic acid prescription treatment for scalp psoriasis. The applicator is designed to allow targeted application of the shampoo to affected areas.
Summers Laboratories also markets another over-the-counter salicylic acid remedy, Keralyt 5, available either as a cream or gel.
What are the side effects of Keralyt?
The active ingredient in Keralyt produces few side effects, the most common being skin irritation. Allergic reactions are rare and include, but are not limited to, itching, hives, redness, and trouble breathing.
