Atovaquone is an antibiotic that is used to treat and prevent pneumocystis pneumonia. It is also used to treat babesiosis, malaria, and other conditions as prescribed by your doctor. Atovaquone works by stopping the growth of certain types of protozoa that can cause pneumonia. It is safe to use in children and adults and is available as a liquid.

Uses
  • Treats and prevents pneumonia.
  • This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you had an allergic reaction to atovaquone.
Directions
  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.
  • This medicine should be taken with food to help your body absorb it. Tell your doctor if you are not able to do this.
  • Oral liquid: Foil pouch: Put the contents directly in your mouth or use a dosing spoon or cup. Use 1 pouch for a 5-milliliter (mL) dose. Use 2 pouches for a 10-mL dose.Bottle: Shake the bottle gently before each use.Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.
  • Take all of the medicine in your prescription to clear up your infection, even if you feel better after the first few doses.
  • Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze.
