MiraLAX is a brand-name over-the-counter gentle laxative that helps relieve occasional constipation. Its active ingredient, polyethylene glycol 3350, is a gentle, osmotic laxative that increases water within the colon. The extra water loosens stools, making them easier to pass. MiraLAX comes as a powder. Doses are mixed with liquids and taken orally once per day.

How to take Miralax

  • Your doctor will tell you how much and how often to take this medicine. Do not take more medicine or take it more often than your doctor tells you to. 

  • When using MiraLAX without a prescription, follow the dosing instructions on the package. 

  • You can measure a single dose by the bottle top. Fill the cap level to the top.

  • If using packets, one packet is a single dose.

  • Take only one dose per day.

  • Doses can be taken at any time of day on a full or empty stomach.

  • Always dissolve the powder in four to eight ounces of water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea before swallowing it. 

  • Make sure the powder is fully dissolved before drinking it.

  • Do not drink it if powder clumps are floating on the top of the drink.

  • Unless prescribed by a healthcare provider, do not take MiraLAX doses for longer than 7 days.

  • Store MiraLAX at room temperature.

What to do if you miss a dose of Miralax

  • If you miss a dose or forget to take your medicine, take it immediately. If it’s the next day, skip the missed dose and take that day’s dose.

  • Never take two doses daily unless a doctor instructs you to.

Miralax contraindications

  • You should not use this medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to polyethylene glycol.

Miralax warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using this medicine.

  • Before using MiraLAX, talk to a doctor if you have:

    • Kidney disease

    • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain

    • Irritable bowel syndrome

    • Any sudden change in bowel movements that has persisted for longer than two weeks

  • Also, ask for medical advice first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Don’t give MiraLAX to a child younger than 16 without first consulting with a pediatrician or other healthcare professional. 

  • Do not use MiraLAX for more than seven days. If constipation persists, seek medical advice.

  • You should stop using MiraLAX and call a doctor if you experience:

    • Rectal bleeding

    • Abdominal pain or cramping

    • Nausea

    • Bloating

    • Diarrhea

Miralax interactions

  • To avoid possible drug interactions, tell any doctor treating you for a medical condition that you are using MiraLAX.

  • MiraLAX only has minor to moderate drug interactions. If you’re concerned about taking MiraLAX with other drugs, ask a doctor.

Serious side effects

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.

Less serious side effects

  • Gas

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea
