What is Niacor?

Niacor is an extended-release prescription niacin supplement used to raise “good” cholesterol and lower, by a small amount, “bad” cholesterol in the bloodstream. The active ingredient in Niacor, niacin, blocks the liver's production of cholesterol. By itself, however, the niacin in Niacor has little effect on cholesterol, but is intended to help cholesterol levels along with substantial dietary modifications and bile-sequestering medications. Niacor also has no effect on cholesterol in patients who are taking cholesterol-reducing medications, such as statins. Instead, Niacor is used as an alternative for patients who cannot tolerate other cholesterol-reducing medications.

Niacor is also used to reduce triglycerides (fats) in the bloodstream for patients at risk of developing pancreas problems because of triglycerides.

Niacor is taken as a tablet three times a day. The dose may vary.

What are the side effects of Niacor?

As a naturally-occurring molecule in the body, Niacor does not have significant side effects. These side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, gas, belching, and mild dizziness. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. However, Niacor has other inactive ingredients, so allergic reactions to these ingredients are possible. These side effects include itching, rash, hives, swelling, or trouble breathing. If you have any reaction to Niacor supplements, stop taking the supplement and consult with your physician.

This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
