What is Dulera?

Dulera is an inhalation aerosol that's used to control symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. This asthma medication contains mometasone, which is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, and formoterol, which is a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) that opens airways in the lungs. Dulera is a long-acting medication that is used as a maintenance treatment for asthma. It is not used for acute asthma attacks; instead a different, quick-relief (“rescue”) inhaler should be used in the event of an asthma attack.

What doses of Dulera are available?

Dulera is available as an inhaler with a strength of 50-5 mcg per actuation, 100-5 mcg per actuation, or 200-5 mcg per actuation. It's usually prescribed to be administered as two inhalations twice a day; in the morning and evening. As a long-acting asthma medication, Dulera should be taken daily for best results. It may several weeks of regular use to start getting the full benefits of Dulera.

Dulera may be prescribed to adults and children five years of age and older. Always follow your healthcare professional’s medical advice when taking this medication yourself or administering Dulera to a child.

What are the side effects of Dulera?

Nasal congestion, sore throat, headaches, and upper respiratory tract infections are possible side effects of Dulera. Side effects of Dulera are usually mild and do not require medical care unless they persist or worsen.

Serious side effects are unlikely but may occur. Serious side effects may include sudden worsening of asthma symptoms (this is called paradoxical bronchospasm and can be life-threatening), which may warrant the use of a quick-relief inhaler or medical attention. Other serious adverse events may include high or low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or cardiac arrest. 

In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction may occur. If you have symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical care.

The use of Dulera may increase the risk of fungal infections (candidiasis) in the mouth and throat. It’s important to rinse the mouth with water (and spit) after administering Dulera. 

Long-term use of Dulera may increase the risk of infections, low bone mineral density, glaucoma, and cataracts in some people. Dulera can also affect growth in children. Children who take Dulera will have their growth monitored.

Are there any known interactions with Dulera?

• Antifungals such as Nizoral (ketoconazole) or Sporanox (itraconazole)

• Antiviral drugs such as Norvir (ritonavir) or Viracept (nelfinavir)

• Beta-blockers such as Tenormin (atenolol) or Toprol XL (metoprolol)

• Diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide or Lasix (furosemide)

• Macrolide antibiotics such as Biaxin (clarithromycin)

• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine

• Tricyclic antidepressants such as Elavil (amitriptyline) or Pamelor (nortriptyline)

Who cannot take Dulera?

Dulera is not safe for everyone. Before taking Dulera, tell your physician about your medical history and medical conditions. You should not take Dulera if you are allergic to mometasone or any corticosteroids, formoterol or any long-acting beta-agonists, or any inactive ingredients in Dulera. You should not take Dulera if you are having an acute attack or bronchospasm. Dulera does not treat an acute attack. For an acute attack, you would need to use your rescue inhaler. 

What inhaler is similar to Dulera?

Symbicort (budesonide-formoterol) and Advair (fluticasone-salmeterol) are two examples of drugs that are similar to Dulera (mometasone-formoterol) in that they contain an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting beta agonist (LABA). Symbicort or Advair may be prescribed to patients with asthma or COPD. Although these inhalers share some similarities, they contain different active ingredients with various side effects, drug interactions, dosages, and age restrictions. Taking into account your age, symptoms, and any previous therapies, your healthcare provider will determine the best treatment for your overall condition.
