Updated Jun 18, 2025  •  Published Dec 30, 2020

Available only with a prescription, omega-3 acid ethyl esters reduce fats (triglyceride) in the bloodstream. Unlike over-the-counter omega-3 fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acid ethyl esters are semi-synthetic versions in which the fatty acids have been separated from the fat molecule. Both reduce triglyceride levels, but the ethyl esters are more effective.
