What is the brand name of Finasteride?

Finasteride is a generic drug that is manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Pharmaceutical Inc. and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc, among others. Finasteride is available in several brand names, including Propecia and Proscar. Proscar contains 5 mg of Finasteride and is indicated for BPH. Propecia contains 1 mg of Finasteride and is indicated for male pattern hair loss.

What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a prescription drug that (depending on the dosage) is used to treat BPH or male pattern hair loss in men. Finasteride is not indicated for use by children or women, but some doctors prescribe it off-label for post-menopausal women for hair loss.

Finasteride is part of a drug class called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase from converting the hormone testosterone to the more potent hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT makes the prostate grow. By blocking the formation of DHT, much less DHT is produced, and the prostate shrinks.

Before you start the treatment, read the drug's printed information leaflet or medication guide. It will give you more information about Finasteride and provide you with a full list of the side effects of this drug. Consult your healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns.

Before taking Finasteride, tell your healthcare professional about any medical conditions you have and medicines you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and alternative medicines).

What doses of Finasteride are available?

Finasteride is available in 1 mg and 5 mg tablets, and the dosage is prescribed based on the indication. Take one Finasteride tablet each day, with or without food, and exactly as your doctor prescribes. Take your dose at the same time every day to help you to remember to take Finasteride regularly. Swallow the tablet whole (without breaking or crushing it) with a drink of water.

Very important to note: Pregnant women/women of childbearing age must never take Finasteride because it can cause serious genital abnormalities in a male fetus. Pregnant women/women of childbearing age should not handle crushed or broken Finasteride tablets. Medicine from a crushed or broken tablet could be absorbed through the skin. Women who accidentally come into contact with a broken or crushed tablet should immediately wash the affected area with soap and water.

What are the side effects of Finasteride?

Some, but not all, of the possible side effects of using Finasteride, include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, swollen male breast tissue, and testicular pain.

If you experience an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical treatment.

Other side effects may occur. Seek medical help or contact your healthcare provider if adverse effects do not go away or become bothersome, or if you have any other questions about Finasteride. You can also make a report to the FDA by calling 1-800-FDA-1088.
