Paclitaxel is part of a group of drugs called taxanes. Drugs in this class inhibit mitosis, which is the process of cell division in which a single cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells. As a result, Paclitaxel disrupts the function of microtubules so the cancer cells can’t divide and grow. Paclitaxel targets cancer cells more than normal cells because cancer cells divide faster and are more susceptible to mitotic inhibition.
Paclitaxel may not be for you if you have an allergy to castor oil. Paclitaxel and other medicines like cyclosporine and teniposide contain castor oil. Before taking Paclitaxel, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had heart problems or liver disease.
Some side effects that you may experience while using Paclitaxel include fever, tiredness, weakness, unusual bleeding, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, diarrhea, and joint or muscle pain. Other side effects include mild redness, warmth, or tenderness around the injection site.
In some cases, Paclitaxel can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. You may get an infection or bleed more easily.
Your doctor should be informed if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant as Paclitaxel can cause harm to an unborn baby. While on Paclitaxel, you should use birth control to prevent pregnancy. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using Paclitaxel.
