Pomalidomide

Pomalyst is a generic prescription drug used to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, after the patient has received at least two other chemotherapies. Pomalyst is taken with dexamethasone, a steroid that prevents swelling. The active ingredient in Pomalyst, pomalidomide, enhances the immune system response to the cancer, prevents cancer cells from growing, and prevents the growth of blood vessels in the tumor, which starves the tumor of oxygen and nutrients. Because pomalidomide is highly toxic to fetuses and unborn babies, patients can only get Pomalyst from specialty pharmacies in the manufacturer's REMS program. The prescription is filled by a pharmacy approved by Celgene, the manufacturer, and sent by overnight courier to the patient. Pomalyst normally costs $32,682.55 at full price. A SingleCare Pomalyst coupon reduces that price to $8,123.50. You can find more information in our FAQs below.

Is there a generic of Pomalyst?

Pomalyst is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient, pomalidomide. The manufacturer of Pomalyst, Celgene, also markets pomalidomide under the brand name, Imnovid. Generic pomalidomide is not available at this time.

What is Pomalyst?

Pomalyst is a brand-name prescription drug used along with dexamethasone (a steroid that prevents swelling) to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell. In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and eventually compromise the patient's ability to fight infections.

Pomalyst is only prescribed only after the patient has received at least two other chemotherapies and shown progress against the disease in the 60 days prior to starting Pomalyst.

The active ingredient in Pomalyst, pomalidomide, works against cancer in three ways. As an “immunomodulatory agent,” pomalidomide enhances the activity of white blood cells that kill tumor cells. As an anti-cancer agent, pomalidomide kills cancer cells. Finally, as an anti-angiogenic drug (a drug that stops cells from growing), it both prevents the growth of tumor cells and the growth of blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients to the tumor.

Because pomalidomide is toxic to fetuses and unborn babies, Pomalyst is only dispensed by specialty pharmacies enrolled in Celgene's REMS program. Once enrolled, the patient will consult by phone with a case manager or a pharmacist from the specialty pharmacy to make sure they understand the side effects. The prescription will then be sent by overnight courier to the patient. Enrolling you in the Pomalyst REMS program is part of writing out the initial prescription. Your physician will do it for you.

Pomalyst is taken as a capsule once daily on a 28-day cycle—21 days taking the medicine and seven days off.

What are the side effects of Pomalyst?

Common side effects of Pomalyst include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, swelling, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, cough, nosebleed, headache, itching, rash, and joint pain. Mental and mood changes include confusion and anxiety.

Serious side effects include blood clots, liver damage, nerve damage, blood poisoning, and low white blood cell counts, which leave the patient vulnerable to infections. Pomalyst is toxic to fetuses and unborn babies.

Tumor lysis syndrome is a potentially severe side effect caused by the death of cancer cells. When Pomalyst causes cancer cells to die, the immune system breaks them apart (called “cell lysis”) and the contents spill into the bloodstream, where they dramatically change the electrolyte balance in the body. Depending on the severity of the electrolyte imbalance, this can cause nausea, vomiting, kidney problems, kidney failure, seizures, heart problems, or death.

Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and consult with your doctor immediately.
