What is Potassium Chloride CRYS ER: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Updated May 16, 2025  •  Published Dec 30, 2020

Extended-release potassium chloride is a prescription drug that treats or prevents low potassium. Some versions use an extended-release technology called microencapsulated crystals. Individual potassium chloride crystals are enclosed in a microscopic capsule. The potassium and chlorine ions are released slowly as the microcapsules pass through the digestive system. This prevents potassium chloride from concentrating in any one part of the digestive system and causing tissue irritation or damage. Microencapsulated crystal potassium chloride comes only as a capsule.
